Enterprises are increasingly embracing hybrid cloud designs—where assets are stored both on-premises and in the cloud. Yet a major question continues to trouble many: How do you decide which assets go where?
The short answer is that all decisions about placing assets on-premises or in a private or public cloud are fundamentally business decisions. In other words, you can typically get the job done in multiple locations, and the decision will often come down to which costs less.
Note that the term on-premises can be misleading in this context. In effect, it refers to systems physically under your control. These systems may be in your buildings or elsewhere, such as a carrier hotel. The important distinction is whether they run under a cloud operating model.
